Key Benefits to Using a Robotic Total Station for Layout
- Accelerate Project Timelines: On average, one person can lay out projects 4-5 times faster than a crew armed with tape measures and string lines.
- Reduce rework: Our robotic total stations are accurate to within 1/16in and greatly reduce human error and compounding errors due to manual layout methods.
- Collect As-built Data: Easily record as-built data for design or QA/QC purposes.
- Design-build: If you’re a firm that performs design-build work, a robotic total station is essential. Simply import your DXF, DWG, or PDF design into the system, and your operator can lay out everything according to the design file.
- Attract and Retain Talent: Updated technology appeals to the next generation of workers, keeping them engaged, motivated, and eager to excel.

Robotic Total Stations FAQs
What is a Topcon robotic total station and how does it improve construction layout?
A Topcon robotic total station combines an electronic distance meter (EDM), motorized prism tracking, and LongLink™ Bluetooth® communication. A single operator can lock onto the prism and stake or verify points four to five times faster than tape-and-string methods while maintaining sub-inch accuracy (as tight as ±¹⁄₁₆ in). The result is fewer errors, less rework, and faster project timelines.
What is the accuracy of a Topcon robotic total station?
- LN-160: ±3 mm / ±⅛ in at typical working ranges.
- GT Series: survey-grade options of 1″, 2″, 3″, or 5″ angular accuracy plus sub-millimeter EDM precision.
Topcon LN-160 vs GT Series — which robotic total station is right for me?
Choose the LN-160 for compact or interior sites that need one-button self-leveling, a 426 ft Bluetooth® range, and ±3 mm accuracy. Select the GT Series when you need longer reach (1,968 ft), high-speed ultrasonic motors, and survey-grade accuracy (1″–5″) for large commercial builds, QA/QC, and as-built documentation.
Can I import DWG, DXF, or Revit® files into a Topcon robotic total station?
Yes. Use Topcon Digital Layout on the FC-6400 controller—or the Point Manager plug-in for AutoCAD® and Revit®—to send DWG, DXF, or PDF designs directly to the instrument. Points appear in the field exactly as drawn in the office, eliminating manual data entry.
How do I set up a Topcon robotic total station in the field?
Simply place the robotic total station onto a survey grade tripod and level it to within tolerance. Then “shoot” or “measure” two or more control points on the jobsite; this allows the total station to calculate its position. This is the easiest and most popular setup method, but there are several other setup options available in case this one isn’t feasible on your jobsite. Once control points are verified to be within tolerance, you are ready to layout!
What is the Bluetooth® range on the LN-160 versus the GT Series?
- LN-160: up to 426 ft (130 m).
- GT Series: up to 1,968 ft (600 m) with LongLink™—ideal for large sites or high-rise work.
How long does the battery last and are spares available?
Instrument batteries power 6–8 hours of continuous layout, and the FC-6400 controller runs up to 15 hours. Hot-swappable spare batteries and multi-bay chargers are available to keep you running on double-shift projects.
What training, service, and warranty support does Site Precision provide with purchase?
Every purchase includes on-site startup assistance, live remote support, and access to our in-house service department for calibrations, repairs, and firmware updates. Loaner units keep your job moving if service is required. Warranties: LN-160 — 2-year instrument; GT Series — 5-year motor & 3-year instrument.
How rugged are Topcon robotic total stations on the jobsite?
Both the LN-160 and GT Series carry an IP65 dust-/water-proof rating and are tested to MIL-SPEC standards for shock and vibration. The FC-6400 controller adds IP68 sealing and up to 15 hours of battery life, delivering reliable performance in rain, dust, heat, and everyday jobsite knocks.
