HP SitePrint: Step-by-Step Workflow

step 1

Step 1

Prepare a 2D ‘Robot Ready’ File

Our HP SitePrint-certified specialists provide training so your team can convert BIM models for robotic layout. Using the SitePrint plugin in AutoCAD or Revit, users define printable elements, obstacles, and control points. The plugin then processes the model into a robot-ready 2D format. For clients opting to outsource this step, Site Precision partners with a provider specializing in SitePrint file preparation.

Step 2

Prepare the Jobsite

HP SitePrint operates under jobsite conditions similar to manual layout. For maximum efficiency, clear as many obstacles as possible from the layout area. No need for excessive cleaning since the robot will print on dusty and damp surfaces. Thanks to its rugged design and built-in tilt compensation sensors, rough and uneven surfaces are also no challenge for SitePrint.

setup step 3

Step 3

Perform Setup with Robotic Total Station

Use a robotic total station to measure at least two control points using prisms or reflectorless mode—this is identical to traditional RTS setup. After measuring, the operator reviews the residuals to ensure accuracy. Once verified, lock the RTS onto the prism mounted on the SitePrint, and you’re ready to print.

step 4

Step 4

Operator Executes Layout Using the HP SitePrint User Interface

HP SitePrint’s UI runs on any device with WiFi and a web browser. Through the user-friendly interface, operators can select print elements and manually add any unexpected obstacles. When ready, simply press ‘Print’, and let the robot go to work. A handheld joystick allows for manual override when needed.

end to end management step 5

Step 5

End-to-End Management

HP SitePrint adds value on-site and in the office through its cloud-based software. Before printing, users can upload drawings to a simulator for accurate layout time and cost estimates. During printing, real-time cloud connectivity provides progress updates, performance metrics, and access to support resources—streamlining the entire workflow.

HP SitePrint FAQs

How fast can HP SitePrint layout?

The HP SitePrint navigates between each print element at 2.30 feet per second and prints an average of 936 linear feet per hour. For MEPF trades, SitePrint prints 200 points per hour on average (includes point and text label). However, actual print speed may vary depending on the size and complexity of the project.

What can it print?

HP SitePrint can print nearly any element from an AutoCAD file, including lines, text, arcs, circles, and points. It even supports multilingual text printing!

Is it smart enough to avoid obstacles?

HP SitePrint is equipped with intelligent obstacle avoidance and cliff sensors, allowing it to detect and navigate around unforeseen hazards on-site.

Who is using HP SitePrint?

Robotic layout is a game changer for anyone marking information onto the floor. General contractors, framers, MEP professionals, and industrial contractors are some examples of those who are experiencing its benefits.

What are the key benefits of robotic layout?

There are numerous benefits, both tangible and intangible. Our clients consistently report higher and more consistent productivity, greater accuracy by eliminating human error, and smoother installations thanks to clear, detailed layouts. They also experience improved coordination among on-site trades and better cost prediction and tracking of layout processes, leading to greater efficiency and project control.

Why should I purchase HP SitePrint through Site Precision?

At Site Precision, we’re experts in layout technology. Since 2001, we’ve delivered a range of cutting-edge layout solutions tailored to our clients’ needs. We take a personalized, consultative approach to help your company seamlessly integrate HP SitePrint into your operations. And our commitment doesn’t stop at the sale—we provide AutoCAD prep assistance, comprehensive training, and unmatched customer support so your team utilizes this technology to its fullest potential.

How many people are required to operate HP SitePrint?

Only one person is required to monitor the robot as it’s printing.

Can HP SitePrint print over difficult surfaces like rough concrete?

Yes. It can overcome concrete roughness or any other obstacles up to 2 inches thick. Furthermore, the robot can keep printing accurately even when tilting.

How long does the ink last?

There is also a wide selection of inks in terms of color and durability for different layout applications. From fast fading (days) to medium fading (weeks) or slow fading (months).

How does it work on the job site?

HP SitePrint is a robotic printer with three wheels and a built-in tracking prism that works with a Robotic Total Station—a tool that measures angles and distances. The Total Station uses control coordinates to position itself, then locates the tracking prism, positioning the robot accurately. Once a 2D CAD file is sent to the robot, it navigates the site and prints the full-scale layout exactly where needed.

Can I rent HP SitePrint?

Yes, we offer flexible rental and rent-to-buy options depending on your needs.

How does the AutoCAD prep work?

We offer a dedicated AutoCAD plugin that optimizes your files for robotic layout. Within AutoCAD, you will make small changes to make the file ‘robot friendly’ and you can add new elements such as text instructions. Once you’re ready, simply run the plugin to select the layers for printing, obstacles, and control points. The plugin then converts your design into a 2D file that can be sent to the robot.

Do I need to be an AutoCAD expert?

No! When you purchase a robot, our team provides full training on preparing robot-ready files. If you prefer not to handle this in-house, we also partner with a trusted third-party service that offers AutoCAD file preparation for you.

Can I prepare my files in Revit?

Absolutely, we also offer a dedicated Revit plugin.
